According to the Bullgaurd Newsletter there are a new series of viruses soon to be released online.
QUOTE:
A sample program hit the Internet on Wednesday, showing by example how malicious coders could compromise Windows computers by using a flaw in the handling of a widespread graphics format by Microsoft's software, CNET Reports (http://news.com.com/Code+to+exploit+Windows+graphics+flaw+now+public/2100-1002_3-5378260.html?tag=cd.lede). Security professionals expect the release of the program to herald a new round of attacks by viruses and Trojan horses incorporating the code to circumvent security on Windows computers that have not been updated. The flaw, in the way Microsoft's software processes JPEG graphics, could allow a program to take control of a victim's computer when the user opens a JPEG file.
"Within days, you'll likely see (attacks) using this code as a basis," said Vincent Weafer, senior director of security response for antivirus-software company Symantec. "This is dangerous in a sense that everyone processes JPEG files to some degree."
Because the Internet Explorer browser is vulnerable, Windows users could fall prey to an attack just by visiting a Web site that has JPEG images. Microsoft has made available online programs that scan for vulnerable software and patch it. Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not vulnerable to the flaw.

Click here (http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/200409_jpeg.mspx) to read Microsoft's advisory and get the patch.
NOTE: Be notified that if you are a windows OS user, once you install the new SP2 from microsoft's website, you should not be affected by any of the above...so says microsoft.

I'm not joking, it's really compromising my ability to read your posts.
Ahaha, my SP2 laughs at that virus.

I think Iam going to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 now.

Well, this sucks. But I guess everyone's lucky that information like this spreads on the internet almost as fast as the viruses do. Thx for the update. Btw, I agree with Seraph, people: you can use abbreviations but make sure that your statements can be understood on a local level. I mean, you may as well post in another language. At least that way, your comments might make sense. :P

You have to use IE to download it, although you might be waiting a while due to huge demand for it.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is really big. It took like 30mins. But it worth the wait.

I'm using Firefox to download it and it's going fine so far, should I just cancel and start it up with IE?
Seraph
09-23-2004, 07:52 PM
Well if it's working, carry on... the version I used wouldn't work with Firefox, so meh.

Yeah, but then I switched to IE and it still didn't work. I'll try again and check back.
EDIT: Yup, I got it now. I feel safe...
Downloaded the service pack two yesterday....hopefully this doesn't effect to many people.....

It says Internet Explorer users are vulnerable by visiting sites with JPEG images. Does this only apply to internet explorer or can you be vulnerable to downloading the virus with other browsers too?
Im asking because I might have a lesser chance of downloading the virus because I very rarely use IE (to tell the truth I dont know why I havent deleted IE yet). The other reason is, I work with JPEGs all the time, most of the time when I download/make or work with pictures, 95% of the time I use/save them as JPEGs.
Seraph
09-25-2004, 10:14 AM
It'll be IE given half the flaws announced are always associated with it in some way or another.
mstretton
09-25-2004, 10:40 AM
Does that mean it is only IE? I know that it uses IE but I want to know if that is the only browser it can use or if it can work with others as well (eg: opera, mozilla, netscape etc)
(btw at least it is a real virus this time. Last time a virus got reported in the DBZSC news it was only a fake virus, a false alarm. I believe 007 vegita did that if im not mistaken)

Hahaha, I went to a WinXP SP2 Meeting many months ago and got it way before it came out.
Either way, I use Win2k... so =P
edit- I betcha Microsoft made the virus so that they could force people to go to SP2 :P
mstretton
09-25-2004, 11:30 PM
Why would microsoft make a virus to force people to download SP2? If you had to pay to download that thing it might make more sense but I dont think it does so it wouldnt make much sense that microsoft would make a virus just to make people download their patch.
Conexion
09-25-2004, 11:36 PM
What if something in that patch makes it so with one button Microsoft could take over EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD...
:P
Haha... I love conspiracy theories ^.^

Either that, or this whole virus thing is a BIG lie, just to make people buy WinXP and upgrade to SP2.

That I can believe a lot more than Conexions 'taking over the world' theory, I think microsoft would be the ones to do something like that but I can hardly believe conexion because I think bill gates is already filthy rich if not the richest person in the world if im not mistaken.

UNLESS! Microsoft want you to download SP2 because it has some super awsome spyware, so they can see if anyone's got any pirated software like their own Windows and that.
I is do liking dem conspiricy theores too :P
mstretton
09-27-2004, 06:07 AM
well im not 100% sure but I think giving people spyware is illegal but that is a very good theory too although I think it would have to be VERY fancy spyware to do that. But microsoft are getting pretty strict about people copying and pirating their operating systems so with XP you have to register every time you change something with your computer, if you dont it will just shut down your computer.
It is also possible that none of these theories are true and its just that microsoft found out about this virus and decided to make a patch to give out to make themselves look good by protecting people from the virus.

Great theory, and it's not far from the truth. Why do you think there are so many "security patches"?
CrazyCraig
09-27-2004, 11:51 AM
Yeah "security patches" more like "download this patch so we can moniter you like a hawk" Microsoft are teh coniving. They're probably working with the FBI because of this MP3 palava, with people downloading over 20gig of illegal music.
mstretton
09-27-2004, 11:17 PM
Well im not sure but isnt making people download spyware like that illegal? I know that downloading music like that is also illegal but so is that, and if it was some kind of spyware peoples anti-spyware programs would find it anyway, im talking about spybot, adaware, etc, they are both good at finding spyware and they would probably do it this time too.
And if that patch is some kind of spyware then I dont want to download it at all (I dont have illegal music but I still dont like spyware or viruses of any kind, besides, it may not work on my computer because I dont use Windows XP.

You people are so paranoid over one stupid patch.
mstretton
09-28-2004, 01:33 AM
We were just discussing possibilites about why microsoft decided to start putting out antivirus patches now. Was it just a coincidence or are they up to something? You may know what microsoft is like so if you think about it you might get just as "paranoid". It is possible that some of the theories above are true, but also you might be right in saying that there is nothing wrong.

Um, ok. Off topic but ok. Why didn't u send a message? And uh, what is illegal about that link?, it's only my signature.
Seraph

Your signature was the link to aforementioned pyramid scheme. I should have PMed the verbal, but it's better now and then to remind people of the rules.

The site you linked and advertised in a topic (which was deleted due to it's not so craftily hidden nature) which "promised" monetary success was founded on the following premise:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v462/Clappers/Schemingbastards.jpg
People with half an ouce of common sense know that this is known as a pyramid scheme, and due to the nature of the lower tiers being deceived bu the upper tiers, it is illegal under the nature that it is FRAUD.
To get the topic back on hand, this Windows flaw is old, most people know about it, and I got an attachment in my email which was funnily enough targeting it with a JPEG file. People must think I'm stupid or something.

Maybe that's the reason you received it...
