Screenwriter Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit, Luke Cage) has signed on to a half-million-dollar deal to adapt Dragonball Z for 20th Century Fox/Fox 2000, reports Variety.

Dragonball Z was adapted from the "Dragonball" manga created by Akira Toriyama and later developed into a Japanese anime skeinskein spanning scores of hours of television.

Dragonball Z follows the adventures of an adult humanoid alien who's just discovered that he was sent to Earth to blend in and destroy our population but instead elects to protect it from an oncoming alien onslaught.
There you have it. I'm not saying that it's 100% official, but three extremely reliable sources indicate that the movie WILL be made, based on the first two sagas of the series. The director is yet to be announced.

Maybe the CGI will be good enough so fight scenes won't look like a video game or even worse (CGI Neo). It'll be nice to see it flop at the box office though

I'll go see it. I don't know if I want it to be a cheesy flop or an awesome show.

I'll go see it. It could be interesting, and who knows maybe they'll get a good director.

Although I'm curious about the guy who's doing the screenplay, Ben Ramsey. I'm really hoping he wrote the new Luke Cage script and not the old one. The old Luke Cage script had the man saying "Sweet Christmas." Sadly neither he nor Tedi Sarafian have written movies that I would consider good.

You just have to wonder: will people still like DBZ in 2007?

Some people will. There's lots of stuff I used to be in too that I've drifted away from, but still check out when something new happens. You never know, the movies might be good and bring about more interest in the series.

There was no "stealing". He just got here first. Besides, that's a name that could be used by thousands of dbz fans in the Internet.

hmm...
Well it seems that it'll be made.
That's not good nor bad news for me
I'm not much into DBZ anymore, but I'll probly go see if it's any good.

If it isn't....well that's to bad

I think DBZ will still be popular by 2007.

I mean look at shows like the thunder cats...they still talk about that show all the damn time...I hated it.
Same with numerous other old shows...
It'll probly place in the top five in the box office...I don't expect a first place though

By then I'll probably lose interest and will be to preoccupied with work and school. But I will go just to see how it turns out.
And I think that was announced before but they changed teh date to early 2006 or late 2005. Go figure...

Well personally, I think this is bad news. I like dbz and I still see myself liking it in 2007. Even if I do like it, I doubt I'll like the movie. Although the idea sounded cool at first, I've come to realize that DBZ is NOT meant to be a live action movie. I think Dragonball: The Magic Begins proved that point already. And of course, once this movie comes out, dbz will be dragged out even longer in a sense that they are still trying to make more money off of a franchise that should have ended long ago. Toriyama was sick of Dragonball before 1994, so you know this movie is only a way to make more cash. All in all, I'll probably see the movie, only because I'll be so curious to see how it does turn out.

I stand neutral here for now. I'm a fan of the manga and anime. I'll go see the movie with little expectation.

In 2007 I might go see the movie. Don't know what I will be like in three years :P Anyway by then hopefully CGI might have improved, then again it might not. Also the fanchise will proberly be dragged out with the movie 10-13 within those three years so there will be people around who will still like DBZ

Completely Agree.

Yeah, If it's good, then joy to the world.
If it's bad, then, well, that would probably kill DBZ

Either way, The critics will give it sucky reviews. I strongly encourage everyone to see the movie without reading reviews, then come to your own conclusion.

Hopefully, it will be rated R. That would keep all of the kiddies out of it.

it will proberly be a 12 or 15 nopes 15, if below I am definately not going to see it then because you know they have done something wrong

It won't be rated R because DBZ is tailored to kids in the US and in all honesty, Japanese or not, it's a 15 at best violence wise live action. People ripping each other's arms off and stuff will just look silly... then again, so will the entire mess of the film so meh.

No one is going to like DBZ in 2007. Of course some fans remain. Dragonball Z was once at the top of practically ever search engine and quickly declined and was pretty much regarded as a fad. Plenty of people have already lost interest in DBZ already and only more will. I'm sure there'll be hardcore fans or people who are amazingly just getting into Dragonball will still see it. Yet the majority of it's fanbase won't be there. Let's just.. well take in consideration how horrible the movie itself will be. No actor can look like Goku or Vegeta. If so, they're going to need a helluva of hair gel, it'll still look very cheesy.

Fox should just lend Toei a load of money and make a new animation movie. I'd see that, Imagine DBZ with current CGI graphics, it'd be a cool upgrade. The live action movie will flop, there's no doubt about it.

Nobody who watched/watches DBZ will really care about it thanks to our friend puberty, so it will rely on the next gen of hardcore fan boys.
They will no doubt love it and try to do "Special-Beam-Cannon" in the street with green face paint on.
A few of the older fans will care (You always care if you waste £2000 on something) and a few will be curious.
But when it all comes down to it its going to be a bunch of 30-something men jumping around screaming out transformation calls while CGI makes sure fireballs and attacks are present and no stupidly stupid hairs fall out of place.
There have been worse movie ideas.

I think curiosity will get the better of a lot of DBZ fans/former fans, I’ll be honest, I know I’ll go to see it, maybe just so I can bash it afterwards.

A CGI Cel-shaded upgrade of DBZ might be cool, but, honestly, chances are it won't happen.

Fox is going to have to pull off a major miracle in order for this to be a success. There are just so many places where this could go wrong.

Then again, it may be a huge hit like the Spider-Man/X-Men or Lord of the Rings movies.

The main things I am worried about are critics, which will be the driving force against this movie, and parent watchdog groups that got the first 2 seasons of DBZ censored in the first place. You know, the ones that claim that anime is corrupting the youth...*shudders*

That's what I was thinking, and it's exactly why it shouldn't be made into a live action movie.

It'll never be Spider-Man/X-Men/LOTR because they all had characters with actual personalities and feelings and not basic black (GRRR! EVIL!) and white (GRRR! JUSTICE!) or sometimes grey (Vegeta/Piccolo) characters.

For those who doubt it could look good, go find a movie called "The Storm Riders." Its better to get the dvd, than the dubbed, editted vhs. Its a fantasy/martial arts movie made in Hong Kong in 1998. It was based on a long running HK comic series of the same name. It fused martial arts, swordplay, and energy techniques into one movie and generally looks pretty good. Now this movie is already six years old, so think about how far technology has come.

Then again, I think it might hurt DBZ, but, yay! It's true!
